Going the Extra Mile

August 2011

Yardley and District Rugby Club is small rugby club, in one of the most deprived area of Birmingham, and with the help and support of Miles Industries has raised over £50k for Help for Heroes, The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, The Royal Marines Association, 45 Commando Memorial Wall & The Rifles Regimental Trust Fund.

Miles Industries has had an association with Yardley & District Rugby Club since September 2010 when the club held a Sporting Dinner in memory of Rifleman Joseph 'Joe' Murphy of 2 Rifles, who was killed in Afghanistan in July 2009, aged 18 yrs.  Following that event Miles Industries donated some money to the Royal Marines Memorial Wall at 45 Commando.

When the unit was due to deploy to Afghanistan in March 2011, Miles Industries were invited to the family day the unit has just prior to deployment so that Miles could make the donation personally. During the events of the day, John Lee (Chairman of Miles Industries) met with the Colonel Oliver Lee (no relation) and presented him the cheque,

In May 2011, another charity rugby game was held for Jonathan Crookes, who was a Royal Marine Reservist and was killed in Afghanistan in July 2010, aged 26 years and again, Miles Industries generously supported this event.

July 2011, one of the rugby members, Andrew 'Andy' Rasin was persauded to do a bike ride from the Club in Birmingham to the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines in Lympstone,  Andrew enlisted 3 other riders, 2 of which were ex-players, Simon Evans & Chris Duffill and Rick Bruin of the RFU.

Again, Miles stepped in and provided the necessary kit and supporting banners. This was a 200.05 mile trip over 2 days, which took the lads 12 hours & 28 minutes in the saddle, average speed 16mph top speed 43.90 mph.  The lads raised a staggering £5865.99.

Commenting on his businesses support of the club and their endeavours, John Lee said “They are a small club with a big heart that is an important part of their local community. The fantastic amount they have raised for these incredibly worthwhile charities is testimony to that and I felt they deserved all our support”.
